Preparation:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Mix Dry Ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add Wet Ingredients:
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract, using an electric mixer on medium speed.
- Gradually add the boiling water to the mixture while mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin, but that's normal.
Fill Cake Pans:
- Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans.
Baking:
- Bake the cakes in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Cherry Filling:
- Drain the pitted cherries, reserving the syrup.
- Take about 1 cup of the cherries and chop them into small pieces. These will be used for the filling.
- In a small saucepan, combine the cherry syrup with 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and bring it to a simmer over medium heat.
- Add the chopped cherries to the simmering syrup and cook for a few minutes until the syrup thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and let the cherry filling cool completely.
Whipped Cream Frosting:
- In a chilled mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until it starts to thicken.
- Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract to the whipped cream, and continue whipping until stiff peaks form.
Assembling the Cake:
- Once the cake layers are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate.
- Spread a layer of whipped cream over the cake and then add a layer of the cherry filling on top of the whipped cream.
- Place the second cake layer on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining whipped cream frosting.
Decoration:
- Decorate the Black Forest Cake with the remaining whole cherries and chocolate shavings or grated chocolate.
Chilling:
- Place the assembled cake in the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 2 hours before serving.
