Preparation:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add Wet Ingredients:

  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract, using an electric mixer on medium speed.

Fill Cake Pans:

  • Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans.

Baking:

  • Bake the cakes in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  • Take about 1 cup of the cherries and chop them into small pieces. These will be used for the filling.
  • In a small saucepan, combine the cherry syrup with 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and bring it to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped cherries to the simmering syrup and cook for a few minutes until the syrup thickens slightly.
  • Remove from heat and let the cherry filling cool completely.

Whipped Cream Frosting:

  • In a chilled mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until it starts to thicken.
  • Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract to the whipped cream, and continue whipping until stiff peaks form.

Assembling the Cake:

  • Once the cake layers are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate.
  • Spread a layer of whipped cream over the cake and then add a layer of the cherry filling on top of the whipped cream.
  • Place the second cake layer on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining whipped cream frosting.

Decoration:

  • Decorate the Black Forest Cake with the remaining whole cherries and chocolate shavings or grated chocolate.

Chilling:

  • Place the assembled cake in the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 2 hours before serving.
